a5c7b9f00b It is 1940's China, and gangs rule the city. The most notorious of them all is the axe gang, lead by the insane Brother Sum. A slum called Pig Sty Alley is the only area safe from the Axes because the people there are so poor. Soon, wannabe gangster Sing and his pal Bone attempt to extort money out of a barber and fail, drawing the real Axe Gang to Pig Sty. However, it turns out that there are several kung fu masters living in the slum, and soon the two sides are enemies. As the plot thickens, Sing must decide- should he become a mobster, or save the day?
Set in Canton, China in the 1940s, the story revolves around a hapless wannabe gangster who aspires to become a member of the notorious "Axe Gang." Other characters include an obnoxious landlady and her apparently frail husband who exhibit extraordinary powers in defending their turf.
Stephen Chow has done it again! However this time better than the last(Shao Lin Soccer).<br/><br/>This is by far the best hongkie comedy I&#39;ve ever seen! Even though it has a lot, when I say a lot I mean A lot of computer generated graphics and it is very much fiction, it is so artfully composed and directed that it makes the movie real good.<br/><br/>It features many of the old cast of &quot;Shao Lin Soccer&quot;. But hey, if it ain&#39;t broken, why fix it? The acting is superb. The plot is nicely molded. it has a satisfying ending.<br/><br/>I haven&#39;t laughed so much in months! Even though it is mostly comedy, it has a touching scene where my eyes got a little misty. It even has a little of romance. The action? Wonderful!<br/><br/>Like most movies, the bad guys will get what they deserve in the end.<br/><br/>Remember kids, crime never pays! :D
This movie had me wondering much. It was stupid and random yet it spoke to me in such a strange way. It was incredibly mixed up and it worked very well. It&#39;s probably one of the most original pieces of movie art I&#39;ve ever layed my eyes on. Though I was very optimistic in the first place. I didn&#39;t really doubt it. But, I still didn&#39;t know what to expect. What I got was a totally unpredictable &quot;drama&quot; comedy. I also have to give credit to a Chinese director making this great piece of work. No offense to other Chinese directors. I have seen many varieties of great stuff from the orient. But, absolutely nothing like this. Great action. Completely original. Somewhat beautiful. I give it ****** out of ******
Viewers will discover that the film has something to offer nearly everyone, whether they are a novice or a black belt in kung fu cinema.
In contrast to the rest of the world the US-DVD is slightly censored in terms of violence and features some alternative shots of non-violent scenes.<br/><br/>It is assumed that Sony Pictures tried to trim the film to get a PG-13 rating, yet it still ended up with an R rating. While the footage in the uncut version is on par with an R-rated level of violence, Sony most likely didn&#39;t want to pay to resubmit the film in its uncut form for an R, so they just went with the version they initially submitted to the MPAA.
